Jobs market: 8% growth in new opportunities during Q1 2013 compared to 2012

The Reed Job Index provides an excellent indication of the overall demand for jobs throughout the country.

Pin Board is pleased to learn that figures released for March 2013 show a 10% rise in new job opportunities compared to the same month in 2012, with the Reed Job Index achieving a record 156 points, its highest level since the index began in December 2009.

The first quarter of 2013 saw an 8% rise in vacancies available compared with the same quarter in 2012. This is very encouraging news.

Job demand
Overall demand for staff increased in March, with a one point rise across the UK compared to February. The index now stands at 156, 10% higher than March 2012 and one point higher than the previous best month, February 2013.

Sectors
This positive trend is apparent across a significant majority of sectors, with 28 of the 34 industries analysed showing positive year-on-year growth. Sectors with relevance to jobs in the construction and building materials industry and sales & marketing professionals are all showing good to excellent signs of growth.

Regions
The Reed Job Index grew in 11 out of the 12 areas analysed on an annual basis. Scotland recorded the strongest growth year on year growth, followed by the West Midlands and the North West.

Comment
James Reed, Chairman of Reed, says:
“Commentators could be forgiven for expecting the jobs market to fall back slightly after
taking such a significant and encouraging upward turn in February, but our March figures
show there has been a clear and continuing trend for growth throughout the first quarter of
2013. There has been a very significant 10% increase in the number of jobs available
compared with this time last year.

“The employment allowance announced in the budget is an additional fillip that will
hopefully encourage still more employers to hire.”

Steve Rogan, Managing Director of Pinnacle Consulting, commented:

"We are delighted that the Reed Job Index is indicating growth across many sectors, including the construction industry and for sales and marketing professionals. The building materials industry is beginning to look more positive, confirmed by recent industry market research and feedback from many of our clients, who are feeling more confident to invest in hiring for new positions.

"However, with the market far from stable, it is even more important that companies find the right person when they recruit and those looking for a new job make the right move for their career".

Roofing sector looks forward to growth says new Plimsoll report

Roofing sales
The construction and building materials’ market should be encouraged by the news that some sectors seem to be thinking more positively. Pin Board is pleased to learn that a new market research report, which looks into the financial performance of the UK’s largest 1000 roofing and cladding companies, has found that average growth in this sector could be as much as 7% this year.

Plimsoll, the respected market research company, has compiled the 2013 roofing and cladding market report. The analysis shows that 325 businesses are showing growth up to 30% compared to the average growth of 7%. Although this means that the larger growth is being driven by just a quarter of the industry, it is still positive news and to be welcomed. However, there is still some concern, especially for smaller companies, which should not be ignored.

David Pattison, chief analyst at Plimsoll, commented:  “At last growth seems to be returning to the sector. However, the key is to get growth and maintain the margin.  These roofing firms are seeing increases in volume, but many are achieving this at the expense in volume, but many are achieving this at the expense of profits and are reducing their profitability.  Average margins across these growing companies are low averaging 1.3% this well below the already very low industry of only 2.1%.

“It’s also significant that it is the largest companies that are increasing in sales the fastest. Typically, larger companies are seeing sales increases of almost 7.7% and this is clear evidence that the industry is consolidating more and more towards the dominance of the major players.

“For smaller companies in the market, this is the third consecutive year that sales have increased less than 2%.”

The report provides detailed information on the leading UK’s roofing firms. It provides an analysis of each company showing their strengths and weakness, as well as showing the fastest growing, those in decline and those making the most profits. More information on the Roofing and Cladding report.

Construction products manufacturers anticipate increase in sales during Q2

Although the CPA's (Construction Products Association) latest State of Trade Survey reveals that sales of construction products fell - predominantly due to poor weather conditions -  during the first three months of 2013, PinBoard believes this will lead to a much healthier Q2.

The weather will surely improve and building and refurbishment projects will be keen to make up for lost time. Manufacturers will also benefit from the seasonal DIY market boost. The outlook is perhaps brighter than it first appears.

Commenting on the figures, Construction Products Association economist, Milja Keijonen said: ‘The poor weather in January and March certainly had an adverse affect on sales in Q1, with sales of heavy side products falling for the fourth consecutive quarter with 39% of firms reporting a fall in sales. Despite seeing a rise in light side sales in Q4, volumes were once again lower both on a quarterly basis and compared to a year ago.

‘It is not all doom and gloom however, as both heavy and light side manufacturers anticipate a catch-up in sales in Q2 as improving weather conditions kick-start infrastructure and housing projects. Furthermore, a growth in sales is expected over the next 12 months. In addition, export sales continued to grow in Q1, with 15% of heavy and 21% of light side manufacturers reporting increased export volumes compared to Q4. Overall, 2013 is likely to be a challenging year for the industry but there are areas of optimism among the dark clouds.’

Other key points include:
  • Light side sales volumes contracted both year-on-year and on a quarterly basis, on balance.
  • Heavy side markets remained depressed with sales falling both quarter-on-quarter and year-on-year, according to 39% of firms, on balance.
  • Both heavy and light side product manufacturers anticipate a recovery in sales in Q2, on balance.
  • Export sales continued to grow in Q1. On balance, 21% of light and 15% of heavy side firms reported higher export sales on a quarterly basis.
  • Low demand is expected to hinder sales growth in 2013 but raw material prices were also cited as a likely constraint by a small group of firms.

Latest Markit's PMI report shows increased confidence despite shrinking sector

The UK construction sector shrank for the fifth straight month in March, according to Markit’s latest purchasing managers’ index (PMI) for constructors. However on a positive note PinBoard is pleased to hear that expectations for the sector have improved and the fall in new orders has slowed, suggesting that there may be light at the end of the tunnel.

The index for March was 47.2 which is up from 46.8 in February, but still below the 50 mark that indicates no change.

The report states that eight of the last ten months have seen activity of the construction industry decline.

However, business expectations have increased considerably this year with the survey’s sub-index moving from 56.1 at the end of 2012 to 64.3 last month.

“The construction sector seems to have a spring in its step as confidence hit its highest level in a year despite the challenging state of the weather, performance and output in March,” commented David Noble, of the Chartered Institute of Purchasing & Supply, which helps prepare the data for the survey.

There is even more encouraging news as activity in the housing sector has grown, with its survey score edging up to 50.8 in March from 50.4 in February. Yet commercial construction activity (at 46.2) and civil engineering (at 42) remain in decline.

“While the government’s focus on housing appears to have had a positive effect as it out performed other sectors, civil engineering is a different story; here the lack of public spending has resulted in the fastest rate of contraction since October 2009,” Noble added.
