Are exhibitions a key part of your sales and marketing strategy?

It is coming up to exhibition season and it reminded us at Pinnacle of that much-discussed topic of if exhibitions are still worth it for manufacturers and merchants in building and construction industry?

Many of our clients, who we provide sales and marketing recruitment services to in the construction industry are beginning to question whether their funds can be spent better elsewhere, whereas some still benefit greatly from trade shows.

Construction products' Marketing Managers usually breathe a huge sigh of relief when a major exhibition has finished and then many Sales professionals become eager to start working their way through the wheat and chaff of the leads generated.

And then, of course, there are the Managing Directors, Commercial Managers and Financial Directors anxious to ensure the leads generate new business to justify the expense of the show.

So with all these people involved are trade exhibitions really still worth the investment or just a costly flag-waving exercise?

A large trade exhibition doesn’t just take a week out of a company’s time; it is a huge investment of people time and finance.

The preparation of a successful show takes months: selecting the space and position; design of the stand; deciding on your objectives and key messages, writing the copy; design of any graphics; creating any necessary new literature; arranging electrics and stand services; completing reams of paperwork; organising promotions; inviting customers and prospects; organising travel, accommodation and stand personnel; building of the stand; coordinating everything with product launches, printing of literature; arranging giveaways, sales samples and demonstrations for the stand as well as maximising the press coverage of your presence. After all that comes the break down of the stand and then dealing with requests for information and following up all the leads post-show. It is tiring just thinking about it!

Stands become a sales and marketing team’s 'home' for the week and some stands can cost almost as much as a small house itself - perhaps they should be included in the UK housebuilding figures!

Any responsible marketer has to think carefully about their show strategy: which show to exhibit at, what to promote, how to maximise the number and type of people visiting the stand. You cannot just expect the show to be a success, otherwise, the expense should perhaps be used elsewhere.

There are many questions to consider when deciding whether to exhibit:

  • Do we need to be there to enhance our profile and reputation?
  • Can we reach people we wouldn't normally be able to see?
  • Is the opportunity to bring people to us and actually show them our product a major benefit?
  • Would we have got these leads anyway?
  • Could we have spent this money better elsewhere?
  • Can we afford to have our sales team off the road for a week?
  • Do we actually have anything new and interesting to say?
  • Can we now reach people just as effectively with all the opportunities the Internet provides?
  • Does it fit in with our business strategy and objectives?
  • Will we put as much time and effort in post-exhibition as we do into organising it?
And there are many, many more which will keep Sales and Marketing Managers' brains active for weeks during planning and budgeting time.

We would like to gain your view as Sales, Marketing and Management professionals of construction products, manufacturers and distributors, whether you feel that exhibitions still play an important part in your sales and marketing strategy.

UK Construction week starts to take shape

One of the great successes of the last couple of years - UK Construction Week - the largest gathering of the UK’s built environment community has officially announced its return to Birmingham NEC from 10 – 12 October 2017 and further details about what will be going on this year. It is a must goto event for construction industry professionals.

It is set to be its biggest yet with nine specialist shows under one roof, the show already has a superb and varied line up of speakers secured from Urban Splash, NHS, Heathrow, Cast Consultancy, Kier and Network Rail.

In the face of change and political uncertainty, UK Construction Week’s main stage will host debates on the industry’s leading issues and trends, including the housing shortage, diversity, how to tackle the skills crisis, building in a pre and post Brexit Britain, and adopting modern methods of construction. Commanding audiences of more than 300, the panel discussions will be anchored by leading journalists and industry commentators including architect and TV star George Clarke, award winning broadcaster Steph McGovern and renowned architecture critic Tom Dyckhoff, while the individual shows will explore sector-specific issues and solutions.

Offsite construction will be a major theme, with a new dedicated offsite theatre and awards programme supported by Modular and Portable Building Association (MPBA) and Structural Timber Association (STA). As the industry continues to embrace the latest technologies that allow it to build quicker, more efficiently and at a quality not achievable before, the show will feature hundreds of exhibitors specialising in offsite, including Portakabin, Containex, and Wernick Group, making it the perfect opportunity for visitors to find out why offsite construction will become the way to build in the future.

Nathan Garnett, Event Director at Media 10, which runs the show, said: “The UK’s construction industry is more topical than ever. Not only is it at the forefront of political debate and public opinion, it’s also clear that we’re moving towards a new age of innovation and change with topics such as off-site construction, modular and BIM driving so many conversations. This will be our biggest event to date, and we’re looking forward to bringing the industry together to debate, learn and do business, as well as showcase a diverse range of products and services.”

One of UK Construction Week’s main aims is to act as a showcase for innovation in the industry, whether it’s new ways of working, sustainable products or evolving technologies. The Innovation Trail will bring visitors the latest products, services and innovations that are changing the way we build and have never previously been showcased in the UK. Companies can apply for their product to feature on the Innovation Trail by visiting the website.

A number of new, specialist awards will also feature at this year’s event. These include: Low Carbon Vehicles Awards, BIM Awards, Offsite Awards and the WAN Transport, Concrete in Architecture and Adaptive Reuse Awards. The UK’s best companies in the industry will also be recognised at the Construction Enquirer Awards on the opening night of the show.

Consisting of Build Show, Timber Expo, Civils Expo, Plant & Machinery Live, Energy 2017, Smart Buildings 2017, Surface & Materials Show (featuring Kitchens & Bathrooms Live), HVAC 2017 and Grand Designs Live, UK Construction Week caters for the entire spectrum of the industry from builders, architects, innovators and consultants, each show provides exhibitors with the opportunity to network alongside decision makers and purchasers while showcasing their services and products to thousands of visitors.

Running into the evening, entertainment will include a casino night at the Genting International Casino with exclusive discounts for exhibitors and visitors, a dodgeball tournament and the return of the popular beer and ale festival.

As one of the leading voices of the construction industry, UK Construction Week 2017 will deliver its most comprehensive and diverse show to date with support from leading associations including The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB), Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), Construction Products Association (CPA) and Builders Merchants Federation (BMF).

A fresh approach for UK Building and Construction exhibitions

Other than Ecobuild, the UK building and construction exhibition industry has been on its knees since the demise of Interbuild and its failure to find its place and keep pace with the changing construction sector.

Even the fantastic Ecobuild show has appeared a little flat in the last couple of years. However, is a saviour on its way, with a new comprehensive trade show, covering many relevant aspects and sectors of the whole building and construction industry?

The newly launched UK Construction Week (6-11 October 2015), spans five halls of the NEC and will include nine shows specific to the UK construction industry. Organised by Media 10, The UK’s biggest design and build event company, UK Construction Week promises to be the strongest trade event the building and construction industry has ever seen. It is encouraging to see a trade show at the right time of the year, with carefully selected and specialised segmented areas.

The building and construction industry has seen huge growth in the last two years and is one of the most exciting and rewarding industries to be a part of and UK construction week will demonstrate why. Pinnacle Consulting wish Media 10 and all exhibitors the very best for a fantastic week.

If you are interested in working in a sales or marketing capacity within the building and construction industry, please take a look at some of the best jobs in the industry >>.

Finally a major contractor focused exhibition and at the right time of year too!

Another new building industry exhibition is set to hit the UK next year, but this one has been needed for sometime and it will also relate to long lost lovers of Interbuild, who will be delighted to see a major building industry trade exhibition taking place in the late autumn/early winter period again.

The Build Show, the first comprehensive builder and contractor focused exhibition and forum to take place for a decade will provide an opportunity for the building, construction and related industries to network, to join together to share ideas, learn new information, skills and working practices, to trade and to grow together.

The Build Show will showcase every aspect of the building and construction industry and a wide ranging programme will explore every key issue and work with key industry leaders and organisations to address policy issues, develop skills and personal development, seek out, recognise and reward talent and ability. The event will take place on 27th, 28th and 29th October 2015 at the NEC, Birmingham.

Paul Godwin, Managing Director of Build Show said: "Autumn is a far better time for a contractor-focused event,” explained Godwin. “With increasing order books, SME builders and contractors especially might be hard pressed to take time off site in the spring."

He added: “We recently conducted a significant piece of research amongst construction professionals and it was skills shortages, more than a lack of materials that was highlighted as the biggest obstacle in the way of industry growth. A key part of our seminars and content programme at the Build Show will be focussing on skills, learning and development."

The exhibition seems to be planning to address something appropriate to the needs of the industry and will give exhibitors a better chance of addressing and meeting users of their products and services in what is first major business-to-business event for builders and contractors for a number of years.

Build Show will bring together contractors, specifiers, builders, suppliers, house builders, architectural technologists and clients, all under one roof and will be an event designed for an industry that is crucial to the success of the UK as it sheds the shackles of recession.

Are exhibitions still worth it? Read our feature.

More than 400 exhibitors occupying 35,000 feet sq.of space will be joined by an estimated 25,000 building and construction industry contractors and professionals who may choose from a mix of seminars, demonstrations, debates and discussions to make the Build Show a powerful and stimulating event at all levels.

Lets hope it is a success and along with Ecobuild will provide the UK with two excellent large and valuable exhibitions to serve the needs of the industry in the 21st century.

Poll: Are exhibitions still a key part of your sales and marketing strategy?

Many Marketing Managers are sure to be breathing a huge sigh of relief now that Ecobuild has finished and many Sales professionals will now be eager to start working their way through the wheat and chaff of the leads generated. There will also be Managing Directors, Commercial Managers and Financial Directors anxious to ensure the leads generate new business to justify the expense of the show.

So with all these people involved, it begs the question: Are trade exhibitions still worth the investment for a manufacturer or distributor of construction products, or just a costly flag-waving exercise?

After all that comes the break down of the stand and then dealing with requests for information and following up all the leads post show.

You cannot just expect the show to be a success, otherwise the expense should perhaps be used elsewhere.

Two more exhibitions for your diary in March

This week we have had a spring in our step (or some heavy tired feet!) due to the Ecobuild show. It seems trade exhibitions are very much on the mind as there are many more events about to happen - almost before the ExCeL centre is even cleared.

We focus on two of these below. Also remember to take a look at our construction industry events planner.

12th - 16th March
ISH
Frankfurt, Germany
www.ish.messefrankfurt.com

ISH is one of the best exhibitions in the industry and has been the leader in its sector for 50 years. It is the world’s leading trade fair for Bathrooms, Building Services, Energy, Air Conditioning Technology and Renewable Energies.

With everything from sustainable sanitation solutions, innovative bathroom design and energy-efficient heating technologies combined with renewable energies to environmentally friendly air-conditioning, cooling and ventilation technology, ISH covers all aspects of future-oriented building solutions.

Over 2300 exhibitors, including all international market leaders, launch their latest products, technologies and solutions. For five days, international trade visitors from the installation trade, retail trade, firms of engineers and architects, housing and property companies, service providers, public authorities and universities meet with manufacturers, service providers  and distributors at Messe Frankfurt.

21st - 24th March
National Homebuilding & Renovating Show
NEC Birmingham
www.homebuildingshow.co.uk

The Homebuilding and Renovating Show is aimed at the self build market. It is ideally for those who are planning to build their own house, add a spacious new extension or want to remodel the internal layout of their house.

Many of the leading manufacturers and distributors of innovative and essential building products, materials and appliances will be exhibiting and showcasing their latest products at the show.

The self-build and small builder market is now a major focus for the industry. The show provides an ideal opportunity for manufacturers of building materials to meet the consumer and help them with their selection of products to ensure they use the most energy-efficient, cost effective and appropriate option in their build or conversion.

The show is on at the weekend too, so why not attend to combine your job and personal life and have an informable and enjoyable day out.
