UK Ventilation and Air Conditioning market back in growth

One by one most sectors of the building and construction industry are returning to growth, and the latest report from AMA Research confirms the positive thoughts in the last 18 months of our clients in the Ventilation and Air Conditioning market. 

The report revealed that the UK ventilation and air conditioning market experienced growth of 4% in 2014, and by the end of 2019 market value is forecast to have reached a value in excess of £1.2bn. Though growth rates expected between 2015 and 2019 can be considered moderate, this marks a turnaround for a market that has seen static conditions at best since the beginning of the economic downturn. 

The largest product sector is air conditioning systems, which account for over half of the market by value, followed by ventilation products and VAC accessories. Positive influences on the ventilation and air conditioning market in recent years have included increasing health, safety and energy efficiency legislation, revised Building Regulations and environmental legislation, all of which have stimulated product innovation and development.

The future performance of the UK ventilation and air conditioning market is likely to be influenced by overall trends in housebuilding and non-domestic construction, RMI activity, fuel prices, energy efficiency legislation, renewable technologies, levels of personal disposable income, plus climatic factors and air temperatures. More specifically, initiatives include The ErP Directive for ventilation fans, the European Ozone Depleting Substances (ODS) Regulation, the CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme which targets emissions from large public and private sector organisations, EU Fire Legislation and general concerns relating to fire and smoke precautions and The Green Deal.
Enhanced levels of market penetration are also likely to arise from product innovation and technological developments that will lead to an overall increase in system efficiencies. For example, variable speed drives, multiple scroll compressors, EC motors, heat recovery and demand control ventilation.


“In general, the UK ventilation and air conditioning market exhibits the characteristics of an increasingly mature market with manufacturers developing brand and product differentiation and niche specific sectors in order to secure competitive advantage” said Keith Taylor, Director of AMA Research. “The relatively wide range of end use sectors and specialist applications for UK ventilation and air conditioning products represents a supporting factor to underpin the long term market development.”

The current forecast is based on steady growth in the economy and on business and consumer confidence levels. By 2019 it is estimated that the UK ventilation and air conditioning market will have increased by around 10% when compared to the estimated market size in 2015.

Find out the news from the latest State of the Construction Industry Survey

The latest State of Trade Survey from the Construction Products Association for the second quarter of 2015 indicates construction product manufacturers’ sales increased for a ninth consecutive quarter, driven by growth in all key areas of the UK construction market, together with a rise in export demand.

Key points include: 
  • A balance of 78% of heavy side firms and 73% of light side firms reported that sales rose during the second quarter of 2015, compared to a year earlier
  • 78% of heavy side product manufacturers and 50% of light side product manufacturers reported that they anticipate a rise in sales over the coming year
  • Exports increased for 20% of heavy side firms and 40% of light side firms
  • 23% of heavy side firms and 38% of light side firms anticipate a rise in exports over the next year
  • 33% of heavy side firms reported capacity utilisation of over 90% during Q2. 28% of heavy side firms and 15% of light side firms reported operating at over 90% capacity over the last 12 months
  • 89% of heavy side firms and 47% of light side firms increased employment in the year to Q2
  • 72% of heavy side firms and 50% of light side firms anticipate increasing investment in plant and equipment over the next 12 months
CPA economist, Rebecca Larkin, said: “The construction recovery has broadened beyond private house building to the commercial, industrial and infrastructure sectors, which has increased demand for construction products and led to a sustained period of growth among manufacturers.

 “78% of heavy side firms and 73% of light side firms reported a rise in sales in Q2 compared to a year earlier. In contrast to Q1, which saw a decline in export sales, domestic strength was also boosted by an increase in sales to overseas markets. Manufacturers anticipate that this dual source of rising demand will continue to drive sales over the next 12 months. Reinforcing optimism over the outlook and indicating that manufacturers anticipate a sustained increase in production, two-thirds of heavy side firms reported that investment in plant and equipment increased in Q2 compared to a year earlier and was cited as the primary area of investment for the next 12 months.

“The increase in demand has seen production increase and manufacturers have begun to absorb spare capacity, particularly on the heavy side, where a third of firms reported operating at over 90% capacity in Q2. In turn, increased capacity utilisation has been reflected in manufacturers reporting higher costs.

“Wages and salaries were reported to be higher for 100% of firms on the heavy side and 93% on the light side in Q2, but firms have increased hiring despite the upside pressure on wage bills. 89% of heavy side manufacturers and 47% of those on the light side also increased headcount in Q2.”

We have been truly humbled and we have a winner!!

As many of you will have noticed we are a dedicated supporter of Great Ormond Street Children's Hospital. We recently held an auction to win a fully-signed Arsenal shirt, and the response has truly humbled us. 

We have a winner! but a huge thank you to everyone who made a bid, it helped publicise this fantastic charity.

We amazed by the level of bids we received and then were offered an exceptional amount of money for the shirt by the eventual winner, Greg Brewer – a massive Arsenal supporter, who bought the shirt as a surprise gift for his son. The shirt raised an amazing £850.

Greg, like many people, has family reasons to be grateful to GOSH, as Greg says, this way to support GOSH was just perfect: “As a big Arsenal fan I am delighted to be supporting such a great cause”.

Thank you so much again to everyone.

CPA reacts to the Budget

The Construction Products Association has reacted positively to the recent budget due to the backing it has given to British manufacturers and industry.

Dr Diana Montgomery, Chief Executive of the Association said: “we were pleased by plans 
– that were in line with our recommendations – of the permanent setting of the annual investment allowance of £200,000 from January 2016.  This will offer industry confidence in the long-term to invest in new innovative plant and machinery equipment which will impact positively on productivity.

We are encouraged by the announcement that government will be bold in in the delivery of infrastructure especially in terms of roads. The Chancellor’s commitment to the £15 billion road spending plan and his recognition of a long-term road investment programme offers certainty to industry.


Finally, we are pleased to hear that the main rate of Corporation Tax which had already been cut from 28% in 2010 to 20%,  will now fall further, from 20% to 19% in 2017, and then to 18% in 2020.

Dr Montgomery concluded, “All of this was good news for the UK economy and industry specifically. However, what was starkly missing was any indication of policies to incentivise energy efficiency of existing housing. We continue to press the government to recognise the tremendous potential for improving the housing and commercial building stock and improve the cost of living for home owners.”

Construction sector output growth picks up again

Output growth in construction sector was recorded again in June following the 22-month low recorded in April. This is according to the latest data revealed in the Markit/CIPS UK Construction Purchasing Managers' Index® (PMI®) report.

The headline seasonally adjusted from 55.9 in May to 58.1 in June. The latest reading was well above the long-run survey average (54.6) and pointed to the fastest increase in overall construction activity since February.

Residential activity remained the fastest growing area of construction output in June, but the acceleration in the headline index since May was driven by a sharp upturn in both commercial and civil engineering activity growth over the month.

Survey respondents suggested that improving client demand and strong order books continued to support output growth in June.

Time to look for a construction sales job?

Looking ahead, just under two-thirds of the survey panel (62%) forecast a rise in output over the next 12 months, while only 4% expect a decline.

Tim Moore, senior economist at Markit and author of the Markit/CIPS Construction PMI®, said:  "UK construction companies experienced a growth rebound and surge in business confidence at the end of the second quarter. Survey respondents cited robust inflows of new work in June, adding to already strong order books across the sector.

"Extra workloads and positivity regarding the year-ahead outlook meant that job creation accelerated to its strongest so far in 2015.

"The extent of the recent rise in construction optimism is partly down to relief that pre-election uncertainty has now passed, but it also suggests that firms are infused with confidence that underlying demand will continue to recover.

"Scorching hot demand for some construction products placed additional pressure on supply chains in June, with delivery times lengthening again for a wide range of materials. Meanwhile, another substantial rise in sub-contractor charges highlighted that persistent skill shortages in the construction sector are contributing to sharp rises in labour costs in some areas."

Open those doors and windows!

The UK market for replacement domestic doors and windows is an important part of the housing market, but it is also a mature sector, and volumes have been in steady underlying decline. 

The good news, revealed in a recent AMA Research report, is that the market returned to value growth in 2014, partly due to rising consumer confidence and an improving housing market. We take a more detailed look at some of the findings...

PVC-u is still King
The dominant position of PVC-u, especially in the windows and patio door sector, is a key feature with the PVC-u dominated direct sell route to market particularly strong in these product sectors. Aluminium and timber also retain shares, though aluminium is largely restricted to specific applications or products. Composite doors have gained significant market share and have grown rapidly in popularity in recent years.

Some major restructuring has been seen in this sector in the last 2 years, with further rationalisation anticipated at all levels of the supply chain. In particular, the composite door sector has seen significant change in terms of acquisitions and companies exiting the market in 2013/14.

Growth set to continue
The forecast for the development of the door and window replacement market for 2015 is for further good growth in the region of 5%, given continued growth in the general economy, strong consumer confidence and a good housing market. For the longer term, forecasts are for steady recovery of around 2-3% growth, reflecting market maturity and a steadily rising economy – though growth rates are unlikely to be buoyant on a sustained basis.

“We anticipate that, certainly in the short term, the market will be primarily driven by demand from the private rather than public sector, because of the impact of cuts in government spending for the forecast period” said Andrew Hartley, Director of AMA Research. “However, a return to the volumes seen in the 1990s is not likely. Increases in the market will be limited by a number of factors including the maturity of the market, high household penetration levels, and the extended lifespan of door and window products.”

Legislation may further increase growth
New legislation may encourage replacement of windows and doors to some extent, as regulations for thermal efficiency etc. become stricter over time, while security and appearance will also drive second/third-time replacement. New niche sectors also continue to offer opportunities – bifold doors have been a recent example as homeowners look to open up access to their garden areas with large, flexible glazed areas.

By 2019, it is expected that the market for domestic replacement windows and doors will reach a value of around £2.5bn at retail selling prices. In the longer term, the UK replacement door and window market is likely to see further consolidation at all levels.
