Construction Products Association reveal Reasons to be Cheerful Parts 1 & 2!

In some of the most encouraging news seen in the industry for a long time - certainly in terms of its upbeat nature and assertive stance - the Construction Products Association’s latest State of Trade Survey indicates that sales of construction products continued to strengthen during the third quarter of 2013 and optimism is high for the coming months too. This news comes fresh after recent figures released by the Office for National Statistics showed a 'dramatic increase' in construction new orders. Reasons to be cheerful, indeed!

The State of Trade survey shows that private housing and infrastructure were still the key drivers behind growth but building product manufacturers clearly signalled that the rise in sales was more widespread than in Q2. This news is exactly what we have been hearing at Pinnacle Consulting from many of our clients, and is one of the reasons why we have seen a 'dramatic increase' on the number of new construction sales jobs on our books in the last few weeks.

Construction Products Association economist, Milja Keijonen commented: "The third quarter of 2013 saw sales significantly rise across the board. Exports supported the growth but even the domestic market showed signs of recovery. Heavy side products, commonly utilised early in construction projects, recorded widespread growth in sales both on an annual basis and quarter-on-quarter. Sales of light side products such as fittings and services also increased strongly after a broadly flat Q2.

"Looking ahead, product manufacturers are increasingly optimistic about Q4 sales growth and most are expecting higher sales over the next 12 months. The wider economic outlook has steadily become more positive, which should support recovery in construction and demand for building products. We note that employment for product manufacturers is still flat, though sentiment is increasingly positive.

"Altogether, the results highlight the improving state of the market; however, concerns do remain about the sustainability of the recovery with most manufacturers reporting that domestic demand could prove to be a future constraint."

Other key points include:
  • Half of heavy side firms reported sales growth of over 5% quarter-on-quarter and year-on-year.
  • Trading conditions among light side producers improved significantly and around 60% of companies, on balance, experienced a rise in sales from a year ago and quarter-on-quarter.
  • Expectations suggest that conditions are set to improve further over the next three months with 67% of heavy and 66% of light side companies, on balance, expecting sales to rise in Q4.
  • Exports continued to boost sales in Q3 with 27% of light and 25% of heavy side firms reporting a rise in exports quarter-on-quarter, on balance.
  • Cost inflation was widespread across the industry with energy and transport costs driving higher unit costs.
All this comes on the back of recent data from the Office for National Statistics highlighting a dramatic increase in construction new orders during the second quarter of 2013. Overall, new orders in the four quarters to Q2 were 12.0% higher than a year earlier, worth £5 billion, with double-digit growth in almost every sector.

Commenting on the ONS figures, Dr Noble Francis, Economics Director at the Construction Products Association said; "Although construction output grew in the second quarter of 2013, this was purely driven by housing, which in turn has been boosted considerably by Help to Buy. However, the latest figures on new orders show that the £111 billion construction industry is ready to enjoy a sustained recovery over the next two years.

"A rise in house building has been augmented by increases in major infrastructure and a return to growth in schools and hospitals construction. Infrastructure new orders in the four quarters to Q2 were 19.8% higher than a year earlier and new orders for public non-housing, which primarily covers schools and hospitals, grew 12.6% over the same period."

"New orders in private commercial, the largest construction sector worth £21 billion each year, fell 4.9% in the four quarters to Q2. However, new orders in the second quarter were higher than in the previous quarter and appear to have passed the nadir, suggesting growth in private commercial medium-term.

"Overall, there are strong positive signs of a sustained recovery in construction output, not just in housing but also in private and public construction sectors. Our forecasts anticipate that construction output will grow 12.2% by 2016 as these new orders feed through into activity on the ground, providing an additional £11.8 billion for the industry and the wider economy."

New initiative supports construction and building industry charities when you recruit

News from Pinnacle Consulting:  We have launched a unique joint initiative which benefits one of two leading construction industry charities each time we successfully place a candidate with one of our clients. The scheme is designed to provide long-term support and awareness of the charities’ good work.

As a leading sales and marketing recruitment specialists to the UK construction and building products sector, we feel it is important to give something back to the whole industry, and this is why we have chosen as our partners: CRASH, and Lighthouse Club - the Construction Industry Charity.

The initiative is very simple: from 1st October 2013 when a vacancy is filled, a donation is made by ourselves to the preferred charity of our client (the employer) who are also given the opportunity to donate. Then on a quarterly basis our charity partners will be presented with the funds generated during that period and the clients who helped us raise the money will be also be thanked for their support.

Register your vacancy today and help others tomorrow >>>

Managing Director of Pinnacle Consulting, Steve Rogan commented, “It is vital the building industry recognises that to succeed everyone has a key role to play. It is also important the industry uses its knowledge and expertise to support those less fortunate than ourselves. This is the basis on which we have carefully selected our two beneficiaries - their causes should be close to our clients’ hearts and they are something they can be actively involved with too.”

Established in 1956, Lighthouse Club, the construction industry charity, gives financial help to construction workers’ families, plunged into financial crisis when they lose their breadwinner’s income through illness, injury or death.

Bill Hill, Chief Executive, of Lighthouse Club said of the initiative “We are delighted that Pinnacle Consulting has chosen the Lighthouse Club as one of their charity partners. The funds raised by this programme will make a profound difference to the individuals and families within the construction industry that we support. It is initiatives like this that demonstrate that our industry has a “big heart” and cares for its people.“

CRASH is the construction and property industry’s charity for homeless men and women. It is a unique, practical charity, which works to address issues of homelessness by harnessing the skills, products and goodwill of the construction and property industry.

Kate Marsh, Development Manager of CRASH is delighted with the support received from Pinnacle and their clients, “CRASH relies on the generosity of companies within the construction and property sector, to continue to help homeless men and women. Energy-efficiency incentives for homeowners a must says FMB

Small building projects, such as, extensions and refurbishment work undertaken by homeowners using small building firms still have an important part to play in the overall health of the UK building industry. It is particularly vital for independent builders and the local merchants from where they buy their products. Manufacturers who either target the self-build and renovation market or have energy-efficient products to sell are also particularly keen for this area to be given every opportunity to thrive.

Pin Board was hoping that the Green Deal would help provide this, but it is becoming evident the Green Deal it is not attractive enough. This view is shared by the Federation of Master Builders (FMB) who claim that more than half of small building firms back a requirement by government on homeowners to make energy-efficiency improvements when they extend their home. This would result in more work for their business, as long as any regulation was introduced alongside financial incentives to help pay for the work.

Brian Berry, the Chief Executive of the FMB, commented: “Following a thorough consultation with FMB member firms, we believe the Government should re-evaluate the need for a consequential improvements regulation, but only alongside a significant financial incentive for energy efficiency. This could take the form of a reduction in VAT on home renovation and repair, variable stamp duty or variable council tax.”

Berry continued: “We still want to see government introduce financial incentives to increaseuptake of the Green Deal. At present, the Green Deal is simply not attractive to most people. New government research shows that 56% of people who have had a Green Deal Assessment have already installed at least one of the recommended measures, and a further 6% are in the process of having work done. However, very few are actually using Green Deal finance to fund the work, proven by the fact there are still only 12 'live' Green Deal Plans. The Green Deal must not be left to fail, which is why additional incentives are needed to increase the number of people who have a Green Deal Assessment and alsogo on to install the recommended measures.”

Berry added: “Further to that, government must invest the money collected via carbon taxes in a publicly funded retrofit programme. Low-income households cannot afford to retrofit their own home and are unlikely to sign up to a scheme like the Green Deal. Therefore government must commit to a public spending programme to lift significantly more households out of fuel poverty and support those who are unable to pay for this work.”

Berry concluded: “We are currently in the midst of party conference season and want to see all three main political parties make low-carbon refurbishment policies a priority. It is the only lever that can simultaneously tackle a broad range of economic, social and environmental problems.”

Construction sector leads jobs market growth for second consecutive month

Pin Board is delighted to bring you the news that job opportunities in the Construction and Property sector increased by 67% on August 2012 - according to the latest Reed Job Index. This confirms the construction sector is continuing to lead the way in the growth of the UK jobs market and in the recovery of the UK economy.

It is yet more great news for the whole of the construction and building products industry - manufacturers, merchants and distributors, developers, architects, engineers, and builders and installers - and builds on a plethora of encouraging news during the last 12 weeks.

Search today for a new job in construction sales and marketing >>>.

Overall the total jobs market has continued to grow in 2013, with the reed.co.uk Job Index now 17% higher than at the start of the year. You can download the full Reed Job Index report here.

Commenting on the latest figures, James Reed, chairman of reed.co.uk, said:
“The jobs market has certainly been buoyant this summer. The construction and property sector continues to lead the charge for the second consecutive month and this is no great surprise given the current level of support for buyers. But will this be just another bubble that bursts?”

“The picture across the UK is certainly an interesting one, with Scotland ranking top for growth for the third consecutive month, which is in stark contrast to the situation in Northern Ireland where the index has gone backwards. Overall, salaries remain static, which means households continue to be under pressure. I expect this will lead to more people entering the jobs market this autumn to look for new opportunities to increase their earnings.”

Steve Rogan, Managing Director of Pinnacle Consulting, leading construction sales and marketing recruitment agency, was full of optimism with the news:
"We are encouraged to see the increase in opportunities does not seem to be just a blip, and the industry is showing sustained growth in the labour market.

"The industry is now entering a traditionally key part of the year, and what is now a vital period for its long-term future. We must all remain focused and not become complacent - the whole building and construction industry has felt the full impact of the recession, and everyone really deserves to reap the benefits of a sustained recovery over the coming months."

Construction industry is growing at its fastest pace since 2007!

Shout about it from the rooftops, the
construction sector is on the up!
We should never grow tired of good news and should not be afraid of shouting about it from the rooftops either - at least we are building rooftops to shout from! After years of negative news being pushed down our throats, the construction and building industry is striking back.  Pin Board learns that activity across Britain's building sites grew at its fastest pace for nearly six years last month. This is news to spread, share and be proud of. So do it!

The Markit/CIPS purchasing managers’ index is something we update you on every month, and we are pleased to inform you that it jumped to 59.1 in August from 57 in July. Any reading above 50 signals growth, and the index is now at its highest level since September 2007.

The increase has even surprised some analysts, who had predicted a small decline, but were encouraged that the figures confirms the healthy signs of a continuing and accelerating economic recovery.

“A new dawn is breaking in construction” said David Noble of CIPS. “Builders have seen a step change in recent months, and are now starting to show their true potential to the UK economy”.

The rise in construction activity last month was mainly thanks to the residential sector but civil engineering and commercial projects also helped.

The Markit/CIPS snapshot of manufacturing also showed firms’ order books were at their strongest in 20 years in August.

With news that order books are strong and with builders merchants much busier, it is also natural that the recent Reed Job Index revealed Construction as the strongest growing job sector too. Many companies are feeling more confident about recruiting, and people more willing to develop their careers, many of which have been on hold for some time due to uncertainty.
