London’s booming! August saw it account for 30% of the total value of UK construction contracts

The latest figures of The Barbour ABI construction and economic report show that the value of construction contracts in London totalled more than £1.6 billion in August, accounting for 30% of the overall contracts awarded UK-wide.

The report, published monthly, provides an insight into the construction industry as well the UK economic climate for the past month. It gives you all the facts, figures and industry news to keep you up to date with what’s happening in the construction sector.

The report is compiled by their Lead Economist Michael Dall, using Barbour's own project and construction data.

The detailed breakdown showed that London accounted for more than half (54%) of the total value of commercial and retail construction contracts awarded, as well as nearly a third (29%) of residential and 27.2% of education.

Michael Dall said: "London's dominance across these key sectors is mainly due to big-ticket projects such as the £420 million commercial scheme at Fenchurch Street, The City North Development in Finsbury Park worth £130 million and a contract for the Imperial West site as part of Imperial College valued at £100 million.

"UK-wide, construction contracts totalled more than £5.3 billion in August, a 16.6 per cent increase on the value recorded in August 2013, an indication that this year has seen a comparatively stronger summer for the construction industry.”

New plan says Building and Construction should be a major part of next government's plans

The next government has been encouraged by leading construction industry bodies to put housing and construction at the heart of its five-year term plan, creating jobs and growth throughout the United Kingdom.

It is evidence that the whole industry needs to act as one for mutual benefit and Pinnacle Consulting is very supportive of any such initiative as this where the industry is working together.

The Get Britain Building campaign which was established in 2009 and combines the minds and expertise of the Home Builders Federation, Modern Masonry Alliance, Federation of Master Builders and the Builders Merchants' Federation has launched the Get Britain Building 2020 Delivery Plan.  This plan makes recommendations for the next government to push housing, infrastructure and skills forward from 2015 to 2020.

DOWNLOAD PLAN HERE

The campaign wants the new government to commit to solving the housing crisis within a generation, publishing a long-term housing strategy within its first year.

The alliance said it was “critical” that small as well as large plots of land were released for housing, and that banks should be encouraged to lend to small housebuilders through government guarantees.

It called for the Help to Buy equity loan to continue. It also said that the government should work with the industry to increase the number of construction apprenticeships. If all political parties pulled together, 200,000 new jobs would be created in the construction sector, it claimed.

Speaking at the launch, BMF MD John Newcomb said: “Supporting both house building and the upgrading of existing homes, the building supply chain is vital to the UK economy. Ensuring continued investment in manufacturing and distribution requires clarity and certainty. We need to know what we can expect from the next Government. Once policy is set, we also need continuity with no sudden changes of policy direction, levels of public funding or delivery arrangements, as we have seen so often in the past.”

Mike Leonard, Chief Executive of the Modern Masonry Alliance, added: “While much has been achieved since we launched the Get Britain Building campaign in 2009, the biggest opportunities to secure more homes, jobs, growth and a balanced economy still lie ahead of us. It is imperative that we begin to develop 30 year local development plans to create the confidence required to secure inward investment in infrastructure, manufacturing, distribution and land, and attract young people into the sector by offering long term meaningful career prospects.”

Brian Berry, Chief Executive of the Federation of Master Builders (FMB), continued: “Today we put forward a range of sound actions and recommendations for the next Government to ensure it fully realises the potential of our sector and allows us to help deliver its aims of increasing the pace of economic growth and job creation, and reducing our carbon emissions. We are calling on the next Government to put housing and construction at the heart of its five year plan.”

John Slaughter, Director of External Affairs at the Home Builders Federation, added: “Home builders are already stepping up their investment in skills as the market recovers. A firm commitment by the next Government to policies that enable the industry to increase supply will help tackle our housing crisis and give the industry the confidence to create the jobs our young people need. Communities across the country stand to benefit greatly.”

East Anglia is Leading the Way in Construction Industry Growth

Although we recruit throughout the UK for sales and marketing jobs in the construction and building industry, it is always good to hear the sector performing well in your own region.

Therefore, being a Cambridgeshire based company, we were delighted to read the great news found in the latest figures which Barbour ABI supplies to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), cabinet office and treasury. They revealed that the East Anglia is at the forefront of growth in the industrial construction sectors.

Mirroring the dramatic increase in construction sales and marketing opportunities we've been experiencing in the region of late, Barbour ABI's latest economic and construction market review, which shows that the value of industrial construction contracts across East Anglia totalled more than £180 million in July - this accounted for 44.4% of the overall contracts awarded for the sector throughout the UK, an amazing increase of 40.2% on July 2013.

This underlines the vital role the industry is playing in the improving UK economy, the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB), based at Bircham Newton, near King’s Lynn said: “Construction is a vibrant and exciting industry that is worth billions of pounds a year to the east of England.

“The industry benefits the local economy as construction workers spend their salaries where they live, with 90p returned to the local economy for every £1 paid in wages.

“With recent research suggesting the industry needs 20,000 new apprentices in the east of England over the next five years, it couldn’t be a better time to get into the industry.”

The report stated that the eastern region accounted for 11% of the total value of construction contracts awarded across all sectors in July, just behind London and the South East with 15% each and the North West with 12%.

Michael Dall, lead economist at Barbour ABI, said: “Industrial construction activity in July was at its highest since Christmas, and the East of England was right at the forefront of this growth.”

We will keep flying the flag in the East Anglia region for the construction industry. You can search for the latest construction sales jobs in East Anglia here.
